When Lions Roar by Thomas Mailer

    Parents influence their children. They have as long as time has existed. Two families of the twentieth century have to a major extent defined the period. I am talking about the families of the Churchill’s and Kennedy’s. They are now characters of history.

    History has always been an interest of mine. It shows where we have come from and the basis for our present civilization.

    In this large book or over 700 pages with notes and an extensive bibliography Mailer informs us of the influence of Churchill and Kennedy from the Second World War through the presidency of JFK.

    The two great heads of each clan had off springs. What the parents did to influence events and what the children did is the basis for the whole story.

    And the part of the grand story that concerns Winston Churchill has been one of the areas of great interest. His prodigy never seemed able to live in his shadow.

    Also there was the influence of Joe Kennedy Sr. He was not so pure as you would think. But he was single minded and achieved his goal.

    I feel this easy to read historical volume will be a great addition to the massive collection of these two families. It is more concerned with the families imprint on the era than the addition of new facts to the time period covered.

Abolishing Abortion by Rev. Frank Pavone

   

Lest you think this is another ill thought out tome put out by the right to life fanatics, let me assure you it is well thought out and documented discussion of the subject. We still need to discuss the issue rationally and factually.

   The taking of life in any form must be thought through and acknowledged for what it is; a judgment that belongs only to God, our creator.

   Not all people wish to be bothered with the issue. President Obama, when he was running for president back in 2008 told the congregation at Saddleback Church when he was asked about this issue of when does life start “It is beyond my pay grade.”  

   Abortion is never right and there is hardly any reason for it. I am aware of rape and incest being used as excuses. But rather than abortion there is the gift of adoption available.

   Life is a right guaranteed in our Constitution –life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. To abort a fetus is taking away the right of life to the fetus.

   Roe is wrong, according to Pavone. Pavone does a good job of showing us, the reader, the facts which we shouldn’t deny.  The quoted document portions of Roe Vs Wade and the conclusions of our Supreme Court judges are to be considered as you read this book.

Out On the Wire by Jessica Abel

     This is my first time reviewing a graphic novel. I choose to do this format because I was intrigued and the subject seems to lend itself to this way of presenting the information.

      To have presented the information in a straight non-fiction format of words on white paper would have presented a heaver and bulkier book.

    This graphic book covers the storytelling secrets of public radio such as voice, story structure, sound, and pacing.

   It takes you behind the scene to walk you through the whole process from inception to final broadcast. When there are areas that need clarification the cartoon persona of the author is used.

   The research involved in tracking down the practitioners of this art is well done. I could sense this was a labor of love. 

   Abel uses personal stories to illuminate the window into this kind of storytelling.

   Using graphic techniques to cover this subject may appeal to some young readers who prefer comics to books. 

   I realize this is a genre that is popular. For those who are yet to discover literature done in print on paper this is a way to communicate both information and entertainment.

   I would recommend this for people who need information on this area of broadcasting. There is nothing wrong with the concept of graphics. It just doesn’t seem to be stimulating.

The Plain Choice by Sherry Gore

   

Every once in a while people decide when it comes to worshiping their God and creator the plain way far outweighs the rules and regulations perceived in other forms of worship. By plain way is meant a simpler life. A life where cars and technology have not been allowed to blunt meaning.

  Meaning is not found in having things or being a certain way. It is found in being at peace with self and at peace with your Creator. If it is found for you in a simple life or a plan choice such as lived by the group of people known as Amish or Mennonite, so be it.

  Gore in this memoir shares with us her faith journey. It wasn’t easy but she is content with her plan choice.

  The life style is not for everyone. Gore is not writing for that reason. She is sharing how she found peace.

   I would recommend this book for anyone who enjoys inspiring and informative life enhancing reading.

9 Thoughts That Can Change Your Marriage by Sheila Wray Gregoire

  It seems there are many secrets to making a good marriage greater. For true intimacy and joy in marriage you will be told, there are steps that must be taken. The motivation for the marriage must be challenged.

   Is that true? Do you really need to know everything before you can have that marriage you want?

   These aren’t secrets. They are plainly thoughts that when considered maybe could help you.

   Your reviewer is male so I could be missing something here.  Since this book is written from one woman to another woman it sometimes goes over my head. But the principles are firm. They can be formed from the principles of the Bible. It isn’t that men are slow. We just think differently from women.

  Women are made to be responders. These thoughts will help the responding mechanism. Men would also be wise in taking a look at the principles presented.

   Gregoire knows what she is talking about . She has a happy marriage to test this on. She has decided to share it with the female .
